Warrior Rising: A Journey from Fear to Joy!

Warrior Rising has been many things to me. It’s been inspirational. Motivating. Intimidating. Empowering. Fun. Joyful. It covers a wide range of emotions for me. When we first started out, I had no idea if I would be a good instructor to so many of you at once. I’m trained in one-on-one training and while I feel that I’m pretty darn good at it, I was extremely apprehensive about how that would translate in front of many. (The first class we [...]

Workouts and Wine: Should They Be Allowed to Co-Mingle?

I say “Hell yeah!!” (“Evil” Anne Marie always has a way of being the first one to open her mouth!) Quickly enters “Sensible” Anne Marie. Of course not. What’s the point of all that effort, all that sweat and all those tears if I’m going to quickly negate it with a glass (goblet says “Evil”, because if you’re not having a goblet, then what’s the point?) of vino? I’d be silly to. (She’s so sensible!) New trends are popping up [...]

“This is really happening!”: Andrea Altshuler’s Marathon Story

I am thrilled to introduce you guys to Warrior Rising’s very first guest blogger: Andrea Altshuler! As you’ll read below, Andrea is a life-long runner and experienced marathoner. She was all set to run the ING NYC Marathon on November 4th, 2012…until Hurricane Sandy got in the way. Instead, she and her friends turned around and organized the 2012 NYC Hurricane Sandy Charity Marathon, in 2 days time! I was so inspired by this event that I asked Andrea to [...]

Trainer Tells All – But Do People Actually Listen??

We trainers are a secretive crew. We know what it takes for you to lose weight, become healthy and turn your lifestyle around but c’mon, if we divulge everything we know to each of our clients, we’d be out of business for good. So when some rogue trainer comes along and decides to expose all these well-kept secrets, we need to call in the cavalry and take him down, one blog post at a time! (Although he’s written at least [...]

Short Workout, Big Caloric Payoff!

Time is a precious commodity. When you have a million different things that you want to get done and not a lot of time to get them done, you need to learn to be efficient; especially when time is money. As soon as that babysitter shows up, it’s go-time! Freedom only lasts a few hours, which seems to me to be a mere blink of the eye. So as to not get too carried away in frolicking/daydreaming/meandering without a stroller, [...]

Sitting: You Love It and the Gyms Know It!

Have you ever asked yourself, “Why am I doing a reverse lunge, with a bilateral arm rotation into a front kick all the while holding these 3 lb weights, which at first are pretty light, but quickly morph into what feels like 10 lb weights?” You’ve certainly asked that question right? (Maybe not exactly like that but something similar I’m sure. Maybe it sounded more like, “This sucks, why am I doing this, there’s too many moving parts and these [...]

Finally… Less IS More!

The NY Times has finally reported that when it comes to exercise, less can actually be more beneficial than, well, more. Cheers are erupting from across the globe as workout DVD’s are being tossed out windows; trendy exercise clothing is now being refashioned for everyday corporate office wear; the phrase ”muscle confusion” can now be categorized as outdated, along with “the Jane Fonda workout” and “the macarena”. A peace has been restored. Well… at least until the next study is released [...]

Ouch! Don't Let Sore Muscles Get You Down.

Last Sunday, I did a workout at home that included a particularly nasty leg exercise: the pistol squat. He makes it look so easy! For the record, I place a hand on a chair for balance and come down only about half way. But still! Nasty. Especially the next day…and the next day…and even the next day. On Monday, my quads felt sore. They were speaking to me. But, I did my usual activities, including Anne Marie’s Warrior workout (maybe [...]

Form and Breath Go Hand in Hand

Good form is important to remember when working out. When performing any exercise, you want to make sure that your form is correct and your movements are controlled. Learning how to properly hold yourself helps to make your workouts more effective, and maybe more importantly for others, it helps to keep you from being all willy-nilly looking while exercising. Proper form is maintained by doing this: slightly contract your shoulder blades together while making sure your shoulders aren’t hanging out [...]

Balancing In Bakasana

So here we are, in a new month (June), a new season (summer!), and with a new challenge (burpees!!) to keep us on our toes (literally). In addition, I’ve decided to introduce a yoga “challenge” – less of a benchmark situation, more like something to work toward and get comfortable with over the next 7 weeks or so. If you’ve been to class in the last week, you’ve had the opportunity to play with bakasana: crane pose (or sometimes called [...]
